CRLA Tutor Certification and Training

The Learning Center at Cal Poly Humboldt is an internationally certified program through the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) International Tutor Training Program Certification (ITTPC).

Peer Tutor Training

All Learning Center tutors attend College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) Level 1 Basic Tutor Training Sessions on topics related to peer-to-peer learning.  The Learning Center offers Tutor Training Sessions the week before each semester begins and conducts advanced sessions mid-fall and mid-spring.

Additional Training and Support to Advance Tutor Skills

In addition to pre-semester training, tutors attend bi-weekly small-group training meetings, reflect on their tutoring, and are observed by their supervisors and receive individual feedback as part of their jobs.

Tutor Certification Requirements

All tutors hired to work in the Learning Center must meet the following requirements for CRLA certification:

  • Attend eight hours of tutor training sessions.

  • Tutor 25 hours of appointment-based sessions or 50 hours of drop-in sessions

  • Complete two independent assignments: a peer tutor observation and a reflection of their own tutoring strategies and practices
