Su Karl, Learning Center Director

Su Karl is the Director of the Learning Center. She also serves as a member of the Inclusive Student Success/GI2025 working group and the People-Centered Change Initiative Team at Humboldt. She has served as a senator on University Senate, co-chair of Staff Council, member on Academic Policy Committee, instructor for TRIO Upward Bound, and the founding sorority advisor for Gamma Alpha Omega, the first Latina sorority at Humboldt. Su earned a M.S. Ed. in School Counseling and a B.A. in Psychology with a Business minor from Long Island University. She is proud to have participated in the Cascadia Leadership Program and to be part of the Humboldt Learning Center team since 1998.




Arianna Thobaben, Learning Skills Specialist

Arianna Thobaben is the Supplemental Instruction Coordinator at Cal Poly Humboldt and an eighteen-year faculty member in the School of Education. She is responsible for all elements of the Supplemental instruction program including hiring and training SI Leaders, scheduling classes and is the faculty of record for 70 SI classes annually. Arianna strives to help student leaders, future teachers, faculty and staff create accessible, engaging and equitable learning environments. She has led workshops & book circles on community building, retrieval practices, active and collaborative pedagogy, assessment, learning strategies, inquiry-based learning and eliminating biases at the local and national level.  She holds an MA in Ed, MS Credential, received certification in College Teaching & Learning in HSIs, Quality Teaching and Learning (QLT), UMKC SI Coordinator Training, and serves on Student Success working groups in addition to the Academic Senate. 

Maxine Mota

Maxine Mota, BS, Administrative Support Assistant

Maxine Mota is the Administrative Support Assistant for the Learning Center. She also serves on Staff Council for the university and is an alumni of Cal Poly Humboldt. At the Learning Center, she oversees the reception student assistants and the front desk. She is also responsible for managing the website, social media, and advertising for the department. Maxine joined the Learning Center team full time in 2017.



Jessica Citti, Ph.D., Writing Specialist

Jessica Citti is a Writing Specialist in the Learning Center. In addition to coordinating the Writing Studio, she runs the DHSI Grant-funded Writing Fellows program in partnership with the Humboldt School of Education and has taught in Humboldt’s EOP/SSS Fall Bridge Program. She also provides individual writing support to undergraduate and graduate students and leads writing-related workshops across campus. She holds a Ph.D. in English and Italian Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a B.A. in English from Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon. Before joining the Humboldt Learning Center in 2014, she taught writing and rhetoric courses for first-year STEM majors at the University of Iowa and taught technical communication at the University of Wisconsin-Madison College of Engineering, where she co-led a study abroad program for engineering students in Hangzhou, China.



Michele Miyamoto, MA, Ed., Academic Success Coordinator

Michele Miyamoto is the Coordinator of the Academic Coaching Program. She also currently serves as staff Senator and is a member of the HSU ESCALA working group developing a faculty coaching program. Michele has served as an equity advocate, the tutorial coordinator for the EOP/SSS program and taught College Skills courses for EOP/SSS freshmen for several years. Michele earned her MA, Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction as well as her BFA in Studio Arts with a minor in Gender Studies from Northern Vermont University. Michele also holds a certificate of College Teaching and Learning in Hispanic-Serving Institutions from ESCALA Educational Services.  Michele has been a member of the Humboldt Learning Center team since 2010.
